Reno Rotaract International Service Project

International Flag Exchange

Merlo District of Buenos Aires Argentina

This year for an International Service Project, the Rotaract Club of Reno will help the firefighters in the Merlo District of Buenos Aires Argentina. We have chosen to work with this group after much research and communication through our club as well as the fact that we have a member from Argentina currently sitting on our Board of Directors and was able to show the plight of the firefighters.

Merlo District Firefighters

All firefighters in this district are volunteers and they serve over 524,207 people. To put this number in perspective the Reno Fire Department has 21 fire stations and the serve 225,221 people. This is on average 10,724 people per fire station. The Merlo District has 5 fire stations and serves 524,027 people. This is on average 104,841 people per fire station over ten times the burden!

Merlo District Firestation

Because of a tough economic situation and little funding, the firefighters have a hard time getting new equipment while theirs are falling apart. For this reason, we are going to gather used equipment donations from different fire departments like helmets, boots, gloves, and hoses. We would then raise money to send the equipment there to our contact, a member of the Rotary Club of San Antonio de Padua. This is Reno Rotaract's largest and most ambitious international service project yet and we are very excited to successfully complete it.

We will not be able to succeed in this project until everyone is on board, and we look forward to the coming year of excitement about this project though the district and beyond.
